Mariusz Tarkawian was born in 1983, he studies Fine Arts at the University of Maria Curie Sklodowska In Lublin.
Tarkawian is a careful observer. His drawings are usually created during conversations when he discreetly catches the posture of interlocutors, sentences. In this way, unique pictures are made, which resemble the pictures from court hearings. The figures sometimes lack heads or body, though their completness does not seem necessary. Neglecting one detail, he obtains the essence of observed realtion between interlocutors. It happens very often that deprived of humor or irony utterance, is shaped by ubiquitous language of art.
As Jan Gryka, the curator of Biała Gallery in Lublinie recalls - "He showed up in Biała Gallery in July 2005 as a volunteer, when we prepared the exhibition Nova Biała. When he helped in its realization, he noted everything what happened around with his drawings. In his drawings, texts also started to appear, texts which he heard while drawing. It turned out that this form of documentation became very active for the exhibition viewers and people around. This is why we decided to expose all the drawings serie, as a kind of "report". While the Nova Biała exhibition, its disassembling, and during the next exhibitions of the Biała Gallery 20th anniversary, there still were new drawings made by the artist, untill March 2006. So there are over two hundread of drawings, which are an unusual registration of gallery activities for over a half of a year. The "Phenomena of this chronicler, which as in middle ages, wrote about the most important actions and events, became an important part of the gallery life".
Since then, there arose closed projects of cycles of drawings: Peeped Drawings, Looking for Art, Potential Artists. In April 2006, Mariusz Tarkawian founded a drawing company called "Szybki Bill" (Speedie Gonzales) with the following offer: He draws as fast as a machine; -he draws more sharp than a digital camera; -in rain, in winter, at night and in extremely hard situations; - where no device can help, there he draw; - weddings, christenings, court trials, all anniversaries, including national holidays and funerals, proms and others; - prices are calculated in dependence on situation; -xero copies or signed copies are much cheeper.
The artists cooperates with culture magazine ZOOM, by publishing a new drawing every month, and club drawings serie every week. In the begginning of 2007, he was invited by Program Gallery to present his individual project at arts fair ViennaFair.

The cycle Looking for Art includes few hundreds of drawings. On the paper of size about 10x15 cm there is a documentation of chosen paintings, objects, video, photography and performance works, etc. created. Mariusz finds them in magazines, and albums of contemporary art. He makes arbitrary decisions about what is there in his collection. While watching those hundreds of images, it seems like still discovering new ones. I started to watch it all together few times, but I still start from the beginning. Everytime there is a new way of watching, however the drawings are numbered and they may be watched in a sequence. I can not do this and I keep trying again... According to the author's announcement, there is still lack of drawings and his imagination tells him that there will be thousands, not hundreds of them. In the series, there are all media and different artists of modern art. There are known works of worldwide famous artists, students' works and also made by almost unknown artists. This selected collection becomes a form, which is not a value description of activities, it is rather a democratic art book, in which themes known and unknown are equal in matter of their message.
These are the reasons of why there are so many drawings, which arose form the strong fascination for art. For Tarkawian it is total, allembracing and so be it.

Project "Anticipation for art" is a continuation of  many years cooperation with the "Looking for art" project. Achived experiences and considerations have inspired the artist to face with difficult theme: futurology of art in contemporary  artistic creation context. Questions which has been asked are a straight consequence of  those experiences. This difficult situation causes the rising of intriguing relation between this what it is and what it could be. It prompts a question - does boredom exist in art? Is art foreseeable? In what degree must it be logical, constant, consequent? Does such attitude set free or enslave? Pushes to activity or cramps, forcing the sequence of events? The test of setting against limits forced by conventions seemed to be completed a long time ago already, however the existence of limitations unceasingly pushes releasing of idea, trying to form her in a specific way of looking. Distinct reason of "The Expectations's" beginning is the danger of idea's figuration. Call of this dangerous game causes strong shocks. It reduces the critic part, come forth the factual recording of next work, disconstructs the way of research introducing the answer before question was asked. However „The Expectations” are always a fiction, though no one can exclude the convergence which can come into being. This what prompts activity of stalker coming after called out plot in recipient, automatically can become also a virtual foot-bridge between past and present.

“I am a futurologist and I predict which works will be created by artists present to me.
I want to be quicker from them and maybe steal their ideas for art.
Will the art of each persons change, will media and style change as G. Richter, or will stay consequent as eg. R. Opałka?
Will Robert Kuśmirowski be a woman?
I also draw  works which I may create in 20 years from now and artists which do not exist and works of people who are not artists yet, for example my brother.
Dreams about immortality are eternal element of our culture and my drawings on the old paper remind about fragility of the materiality in the face of time and put in question this kind of desire.”

elaborated on basis of text byJan Grykia an artist and curator of Biała Gallery in Lublin

Mariusz Tarkawian, working with a paper and pencil, describes facts and events, which can not be wrote down by a mechanical device. Photography and video lost their visual sense. What Tarkawian sees, can not be seen by anyone else. Here we got the following observations:

-  he draws very fast
-  he draws very fast and very good
-  early the next day, his drawings become a discovery, they make us surprised
-  every portrayed person and their fragments in the drawings, are much alike them
-  he draws everything, independently on the situation or weather
-  he always has his pencil and paper with him

The manual talent of Tarkawian is obvious and it is not the main value, however without the manual abilities, you could not treat the drawing artist as someone special. His drawings ingrained really fast in the social sphere, and the first mechanism which was created during Nova Biała, is still an active documentation of gallery space, in club space and in press.
What seemend to be a simple academic style of fast drawing, which is usually an introduction to create the "serious works of art", here it is a form breaking the rule and scheme.
Series of drawings show an unusual identity. They are a documentation of captured moment, which passes too fast to remember it. But when later we watch the drawings of Tarkawian, and we read the noted conversations, we find out that those moments were unusual. Everyone looks for their own portraits at first, then they read the texts with hope, that fragments of their words are there also, in the chronicle of one small gallery, somewhere in the end of the Union. Probably this conventional document gets this kind of meaning here.

A partly intuitionally created, his first serious project Peepd Drawings, in its conceptual meaning is the base of his life and artistic strategy. Therefore, in his serie of Peeped Drawings, art as a close ephere of the artist, becomes the main subject. His drawings are created in natural situations of Mariusz Tarkawian and his friends artists. Often while exhibitions assembling, curators' conversations, artists' active discussions, vernissages and static expositions. Drawings arise in series, while watching and listening at the same time, in a specified time and place. It is a kind of visual report of where the portrayed is, what he does and what happens around. There are also differences, which become valuable, as I suppose, a little bit later. The understatements and lack of details is important. Lack of body parts and elements is visible and it has its meaning. Fragments of words and sentences, frazes of slang, sweardwords and unknown words are an objective evidence, with no valuation. The expression way is importnt also, drawings are not a speculation project. The lines are full of energy, vivid. Photography can not express this kind of images. A mechanical observation and its fastness and quality of capture, as well as the fact of real situations becoming the subject, are unusual values. The situation that goes on and transforming its code into a closed formula of intuitionally constructed language are unusual. Perfectionism, scrupulosity and drawings lightness are their advantage, and doffers them from other situations like this. Here i think about Ładnie group and Pola Dwirnik, and about comics at all. Visual form of conotation including text is something obvious and even common. It is not a differing method on the level of general concept. It is sometimes probably in the details or nuances, which may be described. This difference which does not make any values is seen between the mentioned drawings of other artists and the ones made by Mariusz..
