 katarzyna górna      presentation of works

   l_flag_germany.gif

Katarzyna Górna, born 1968 in Warsaw, currently lives and works in the city of her birth.  She received her Master's degree from the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, in the workshop of Professor Grzegorz Kowalski. Her main mediums being photography, spatial installations, and video, Katarzyna's leading qualities in her work consist of the human life and the human body as a vessel.  A woman freed from the burdens of dogma and superstition, Katarzyna focuses her work on the questions of identity and the fascination with the uniqueness of sexual minorities. When viewing her works, one feels a strong bond with her sense of womanhood.  This is a relationship that is pushed farther than just the image of being domesticated, submissive, obedient, or passive. Women portrayed in Górna’s pieces hypnotize the viewer with intense gaze.  It is a gaze acutely penetrating and with the ability to enter the secret crevasses of the human soul.  She is able to decode and unravel stereotypes as she wrestles with our world's standard ways of thinking. She shows the human core in the purest of forms. Drawing on symbols, she modifies and reevaluates their meanings in relation to that of the human spirit. She shows her observers a naked body standing beyond nudity and uses sexuality as a statement. The material used for clothing holds special significance and stands alone as a clear symbol of her feelings and stance. The artist is able to observe the world of human dependence and consistently portray it with a respect for man’s physical and psychological integrity.

These works are mainly portrayed in simple black-and-white photography.  They are loaded with explicit principle and historical connotation. Showing youth to maturity, mother to child and man to woman, the photographs are able to carry a distinct reference to an array of traditional stereotypes.  Classic in composition and with the lightness of sparingly added details, they allow the viewer to look at them with relief and to absorb the wonderful simplicity of the art.

MADONNAS 1996-2001 presented by Gallery Program in:
 INC 2004

 ARTE FIERA 06

The triptych “Madonnas" depicts three stages of womanhood inscribed in, and marked by, the Christian narrative.  They illustrate the virgin, the wife and the mother.  First there is a depiction of a young girl who lightly and gracefully enters the world of the unknown. The first menstrual blood flowing delicately yet visibly disrupts the comfort of her innocence and clearly changes the audience's perception.  Next is the mother with a child in her arms.  Her amazing eroticism destroys the tranquility of motherhood and her sexuality is not hidden.  There is still the lingering of a past temptress in her.  The third part is the depiction of a mature and powerful woman, confidently holding a man.  She radiates tranquility and security.  Górna is able to tear the woman away from the virgin mother ideal and in turn, from this traditional image.

DOUBLE PORTRAITS 2001 exhibited in:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Katarzyna Górna 1994-2004
Bunkier Sztuki, Kraków; Arsenał, Poznań; Łaźnia, Gdańsk, 05

The series of “Double Portraits" is a confrontation of the subverted to the unrestrained. A dressed figure opposed to nudity, Double Portraits sets free the honesty of beauty. The body and the face complement each other and the characters are presented in carefully premeditated arrangements resembling the times of the Renaissance.

A SET OF WOMEN 2000 exhibited in :
HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Katarzyna Górna 1994-2004
Bunkier Sztuki, Cracow; Arsenal, Poznan; Łaźnia, Gdansk, 05

Set of Women is a line of female figures in a self-assured poses and broken by the silhouette of a young girl.
The women, dressed only in black robes, stand graceful and calm. Their bare breasts carry the warm association of motherhood and yet they stand with their arms crossed and showing a lack of resilience. Strong, confident gestures constitute a dignity that imposes obedience.
Rich in experience, they are self-assured and fulfilled.
The figure of the girl suspended in different poses between them merely awaits her turn.  She anticipates the day when she will stand next to them with the shared confidence and poise they already possess.  The women in Górna’s photographs, despite the culturally rooted poses they assume, openly parade their consciousness and boldness.  Gracefully and with dignity, the women show us the manifestation of their independence.  Although they are naked, they are not helpless.  Although they are virgin, they are not naive.  Although they are erotic, they are not shameful. They are proud, full of dignity and exuding confident experience.

Since her first film in 2003, video art has slowly become to be an important medium in the art world.  Each realization is made very carefully and after the contact with people and places taking participating in the film.

SUMO 2003
presented by Gallery Program in:

 ARTE FIERA 06

 VIENNAFAIR 06
 NIGHT OF THE MUSEUMS 06

The artist’s first video project was the film “Sumo" from 2003. It is a continuation to the legend of women’s power. On a black background appears a row of characters, moving horizontally and simulating the movements of sumo warriors. The women explicitly demonstrate their strength, a will of fair fight, and the might of the undertaken decision. Each one is different yet equally determined. They assume identical poses and make the same gestures. Together, they mark the fighting area by a scattering of salt. They symbolically wash their hands of any unfair moves.  They rub their hands together, demonstrating strength and confidence. The women are masterful and ready, they will not cease fighting for their rights.  They will be successful.

Happy Birthday 04 presented by Gallery Program in:

 PREVIEW BERLIN 05

 ARTE FIERA 06

 VIENNAFAIR 06
 NIGHT OF THE MUSEUMS 06

The artist’s latest films concern the subject of gender. They show men and women dressed as icons of pop-culture (“Happy Birthday" and “Freddie"). The costume worn determines the behavior and conceals the sex. Here, being a man or a woman is not a mask.  It is the appearance that determines behavior. Individuality is defeated by the fixed image of a forced icon.
